Type of Service

Installation of a braced meteorological tower for the measurement of wind resources

Date

August 2022

General Data

Cenotillo, Yucatán, Mexico • 2022

Instrumentation

  • 10 cup anemometers

to measure the magnitude of wind speed, located at various heights.

  • 1 vertical propeller anemometer

    at 145 m.

  • 4 wind vanes

to measure the direction of the wind, installed at various heights.

  • 2 combined instruments to measure relative humidity and temperature.

  • 2 barometers.

  • 1 rain gauge

    at a height of 10 m.

  • 1 data logger Ammonit Meteo-40L

to control the sensors and record the measurements.

Regulatory Compliance

The installation of the meteorological mast was carried out in compliance with the standard IEC-61400-12-1 Ed. 2 Annex G and the MEASNET recommendations for wind resource assessment. The design of the mast structure is suitable for a high-quality wind measurement campaign with low flow distortions and uncertainties, seeking to avoid any possible deficiencies with respect to the IEC 61400-12-1 standard.

In addition, anemometers and wind vanes installed on the top of the mast meet the requirements of IEC 61400-12-1.

Certifications

All installed instruments have calibration certificates accredited by DKD (German Calibration Service), the entity responsible for correct measurement in accordance with binding international standards and which is part of the DAkkS, the official German accreditation body.

Description of the work undertaken

Telener 360 undertook the installation and assembly of a 150-meter weather mast in August 2022. The objective of this work was to measure wind resources in a High quality wind measurement campaign.

The mast orientation was carried out as agreed with the client, referring all directions to the Geographic North (True North). Compensation was also applied to the weather vanes so that measurements were made with respect to true north.

The installation was completed with a series of sensors located at the heights specified by the client, considering the height of the base of the tower. Telener 360 also took care of the Design and installation of booms for anemometers and wind vanes, both for those on the top (with a separation of 2.6 m between anemometers) and for the sides, complying with the IEC 61400-12-1 standard.

Next, the data logger was programmed and wired, to process sensor signals by applying slope and offset values. The cabling and connection of all installed sensors were arranged in the datalogger cabinet.

To supply energy to the tower, a system consisting of a photovoltaic panel and a battery was implemented.

The topography of the site was also analyzed, characterized by dense vegetation (trees of different heights) and regular terrain without significant elevations, determining it as a site of complex topography.

Finally, Telener 360 tracked the measurements to ensure correct instrument calibration and reliability.
