Meteorological towers for the Arauco Wind Farm

Proyecto PE Arauco en Argentina, Telener 360

Description

Tower Type: 2 TZ-45 Weather Towers

Total height: 84 meters

Other information:

  • Autonomous solar power supply system composed of photovoltaic solar panels and batteries, to power the sensors and the datalogger.
  • Hot-dip galvanized coating for both towers

Type of Service

Installation of two meteorological masts for wind resource measurement

Date

December 2024

General Data

Arauco, La Rioja, Argentina • 2024

Instrumentation

  • 5 anemometers

to measure the magnitude of wind speed: four cup and one ultrasonic.

  • 3 weather vanes

    to measure wind direction, installed at 80 m, 76 m and 18 m.

  • 1 humidity and temperature sensor

    installed at 78 m.

  • 1 barometer

to measure atmospheric pressure, installed at 78 m.

  • 1 rain gauge

    installed at a height of 2 m.

  • 1 data logger

Campbell Scientific CR1000X to process and store signals from sensors.

  • Obstruction lights (upper and middle).

  • A system of atmospheric discharges.

Regulatory Compliance

Both weather masts were installed and commissioned in accordance with IEC-61400-12-1 Ed. 2 (Annex G) and MEASNET recommendations for the evaluation of wind resources.

Each mounted sensor was calibrated and installed following the IEC 61400-12-1 Ed.2 standard and MEASNET recommendations.

Anemometer and wind vane supports, including side supports, also meet the requirements of IEC 61400-12-1 (Annex G.4.3), ensuring the proper distance between the mast and the sensors to avoid wind speed deficit and flow distortions.

Certifications

All installed instruments have calibration certificates accredited by DKD (German Calibration Service), the entity responsible for correct measurement in accordance with binding international standards and which is part of the DAkkS, the official German accreditation body.

Description of the work undertaken

Within this project, Telener 360 installed two meteorological towers for the measurement of wind resources at the Arauco Wind Farm, in La Rioja, Argentina.

In addition to the precise orientation of the towers with respect to the geographic North (True North), considering the magnetic declination of the site, multiple meteorological sensors were also installed and configured at different heights, listed above.

The Campbell Scientific CR1000X datalogger was integrated into an airtight enclosure, along with the wiring and wiring of all sensors.

To save costs and increase efficiency, both towers incorporated a solar electric power supply system composed of photovoltaic panels and batteries for the autonomous operation of the equipment.

Safety was one of the key factors, as the verticality of the towers was ensured with solid anchors, and obstruction lights and an atmospheric discharge system were installed.

Finally, the client was offered detailed technical documentation, including engineering calculations, instrumentation drawings, elevation and foundation plans, among others.
